Candy Making Extravaganza 2006

Guess who made candy yesterday? Guess who made a mess yesterday? Guess who never wants to see another piece of caramel or toffee again? Hmmm. . .probably a good thing. This picture taken just as we started. Look how chipper and excited we are about the prospect of becoming candy-making babes. Good thing we didn't know what was ahead of us. Somehow, Lori always gets me involved in these ridiculous adventures. We've never made candy before, but considering our lack of experience, the tender treasures turned out pretty darned good. We chopped, stirred, prayed, and prepped most of the afternoon. At about 8:30 when I left, we were exhausted. Lori still has a million pound brick of dipping chocolate in her kitchen and plenty of wrapped caramels to keep the kids occupied for weeks to come. Look at her level of concentration! Candy making is serious business. You measure everything exactly, take temperatures, and baby the chocolate. If anyone needs some help tempering chocolate, just let me know. I'm now an expert. . .sort of.

Mmmmm. . .next year we're taking a trip to See's Candy and just loading up the back of my car. Less expensive? Heck, yes! Cleaner? Heck, yes! Stress free? Heck, yes? As much fun? NO Way JOSE!

Now wait just a minute - get this - here are these two people that have more talent in their little finger than I have in my whole body and one of them calls the mother just before they start their big candy event and say "how many cups in a pint? and how many pints in a quart? Oh my gosh - they have slipped. I think they missed a grade because they were so smart and missed the essential class in "cups, pints and quarts". Oh and by-the-way I never saw any of that candy that was made. I thought I would at least get a taste of the delicious carmels. Hummmmmmm maybe the quart got mixed with the cup and the cup mixed with the pint. I just might have to ask Allan if he got any of the wonderful Christmas candy and how it tasted.
