Luke Teeters on Teenagehood

Today is Luke's 12th birthday. He called to invite me to his ordination and as I was sitting in the little room watching this young man with so much potential, I realized a few things. First, I saw the influence we can have on those around us. Luke was surrounded by people who love him. They have encouraged, loved, disciplined, taught, and cared. Luke has watched them teach primary lessons, offer advice, and serve. He learns by watching. I may be a few years older than Luke, but I still learn the exact same way. I'm inspired the goodness of others. I'm effected by the sins of others. I observe and learn. I also have the power to inspire and affect those around me for good or for bad.

My second realization came as I felt a calm reassurance that there is plan. You know me, I love lists and preparing, and thinking ahead. The understanding that my life is not aimless or random--that it has a purpose and a direction brings a priceless peace.

Today, I'm grateful for little friends who have big hearts, brilliant minds, witty humor, and limitless potential. I'm glad Luke and I get to share time and be examples for one another. I hope I'm as good of an example to him as he is to me.

Happy Birthday, Luke! You're wicked awesome.
