Veterans' Day

My mom sent me an package of pictures through overnight mail, but I keep missing the mail man because. . .well, I have a job! So, I went to the post office to pick it up yesterday, but "Mr. Postman" was trying to RE-deliver it. I returned this afternoon to find the post office dark and empty. ARRRRGH! I was pretty annoyed until I realized the significance of this day. Yep, it's Veteran's Day.
I love history and reading about the experiences of those who have fought for our freedom. My dad served in the Airforce before he married my mom. . .and thus, before I came along. He also worked for the federal government for most of my growing up years so he had the holiday off of work. Why exactly don't they let school kids out? I'm still bitter about that! Anyway, I remember being so excited that dad was home because he would walk me to school on those early November mornings. One day a year, I walked the three blocks to Stoddard Elementary with him. For some reason that was a special time for me. We would have a great talk and I was so proud of him. Of course, as I entered Middle School and then High School, it wasn't quite as cool to walk to school with your dad (who always wore his green/white striped snow cap--with a huge pompom). Today--well into my twenties, I'd give almost anything to have my dad walk me to school. . .pompom & all. To my dad & veterans everywhere--thank you.
